Brazil is the country with the most cosmetic surgery procedures, beating even the plastic-surgery-loving United States, according to the latest industry data.
According to a study by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), there were more than 23 million cosmetic and non-surgical procedures performed across the world in 2013. The U.S. had by far the largest number of overall procedures, with almost 4 million — accounting for a whopping 17 percent of the global total. Brazil came in a distant second, with slightly more than 2.14 million procedures performed in 2013.
However, Brazil was first when it came to surgical procedures, with 1.5 million recorded, just edging out the 1.45 million in the U.S. Breast augmentation, liposuction and tummy tucks were some of the most popular surgeries in the sunny South American nation. Brazil was also by far the global leader in gluteoplasties (“butt lifts”), with 64,000, or 20 percent of the total number of such surgeries performed in 2013.
Brazil has the second largest estimated number of plastic surgeons in the world, after the United States.
The other nations rounding out the top ten countries where plastic surgery is most popular were Mexico, Germany, Spain, Colombia, Italy, Venezuela, Argentina and Iran.
