Human Rights Watch: Police torture still serious issue in Brazil

A leading human rights group says torture remains a serious problem in Brazil despite government efforts to curb it.

The New York-based Human Rights Watch says in a statement emailed Monday that it has found evidence that security forces and prison authorities have used cruel and inhuman treatment against 64 people in their custody.

The group says that it found evidence that since 2010, more than 150 police officers and prison guards were involved in torture and cruel treatment inside detention centers, police stations and vehicles in five states.

The government’s Human Rights Secretariat said it had no immediate comment.
