Tensions rise in Haiti as UN peacekeepers clash with Aristide supporters

U.N. peacekeepers in Haiti clashed with supporters of Jean-Bertrand Aristide outside the former president’s home in the capital Thursday afternoon.

Troops used tear gas and armored vehicles to clear out barricades and chase off about 150 people who were seeking to prevent the possible arrest of Aristide.

Earlier, some demonstrators attacked a U.N. vehicle with rocks and the occupants were forced to flee into a nearby home until they were rescued by troops.

Haiti has been tense since an investigating judge issued a summons ordering Aristide to testify in court in a money-laundering case.
