MEXICO CITY (AP) — Tropical Storm Polo was churning south of the Baja California Peninsula as residents continued to clean up from Hurricane Odile.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami said the center of Polo was about 165 miles south of Cabo San Lucas and moving to the northwest. It was expected to pass south of the peninsula later Saturday or early Sunday.
The hurricane center said Polo was likely to weaken over the weekend. It warned, however, that coastal areas could see dangerous surf and rip-current conditions.
Cabo San Lucas and nearby towns were hit earlier this week by Category 3 Hurricane Odile, which knocked out power and left thousands without water or phone service. Authorities sent in federal troops and police forces to help restore order and to calm outbreaks of looting.
