Honduras arrests official accused of $100 million social security theft

Honduran authorities say they have arrested a fugitive government official suspected of misappropriating at least $100 million from the country’s social security program.

President Juan Orlando Hernández says ex-Social Security Director Mario Zelaya was detained in southern Honduras.

Zelaya is suspected of abuse of authority, breach of official duties, misappropriation of public funds and fraud.

Hernández announced his detention in comments broadcast on television Tuesday.
