Mexico detains 8 soldiers in investigation of June killing of 22

Mexico’s Defense Department says an army officer and seven soldiers have been detained in connection with the killing of 22 people in a rural town in southern Mexico.

The department said in a statement late Thursday that the eight were involved in the June 30 incident in San Pedro Limón.

The eight soldiers are being held at a prison in Mexico City on military charges of disobedience and breach of duty.

The army had said earlier that the deaths happened during a firefight between troops and armed criminal suspects.
