Chile’s president is announcing a $4.2 billion investment plan for transportation projects.
Michelle Bachelet said Wednesday that the program includes a $1.4 billion extension of the Santiago subway.
It also would involve reconstruction of cable-drawn elevators that were damaged during a fire earlier this year in the port city of Valparaiso. The elevators run on steep railways and are used by Valparaiso’s residents to reach hilly neighborhoods.
The government also plans to construct a cable car in the northern city Antofagasta to help reduce traffic jams.
