Mexican authorities detain fugitive Iguala mayor, wife

Mexican officials say federal police have detained the former mayor of Iguala and his wife, who are said to have ordered the September 26 attacks on teachers’ college students that left six dead and 43 missing.

Two security officials say José Luis Abarca and María de los Ángeles Pineda were detained early Tuesday in Mexico City without resisting. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press. They provided no other details.

The couple was in the custody of the Attorney General’s Office, where they were giving statements. Mexican authorities still have not determined the whereabouts of the 43 students.
