Ecuadorean satirist stops joking following death threats

An Ecuadorean satirist whose biting online political humor provoked the ire of President Rafael Correa says he’s ceasing and desisting after receiving anonymous death threats.

The man known as CrudoEcuador directly addressed Correa on his website in a post Friday. “You won,” he wrote. “My family comes first and I don’t want to expose them to this mafia.”

CrudoEcuador, who has insisted on remaining anonymous, published a photo of a floral arrangement that he said arrived at his home with a threatening note. He did not answer messages left on his phone.

After CrudoEcuador posted a series of photo-montages poking fun at Correa, the president marshalled supporters online against critics he accused of defamation.

Human rights and press freedom say Correa systematically leverages state institutions to violate free expression.
