The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) is one of the nation’s premier research universities. Its seven colleges offer over 80 areas of study, supported by more than a dozen research centers, labs and facilities which provide hands-on experience for students in a variety of disciplines.
A reputation for research
UAH is home to nearly 8,000 students from the US and beyond. The low faculty-to-student ratio and small class sizes create the ideal environment for learning, delivering a curriculum to challenge and inspire.
As a tier-one research university, UAH offers students the opportunity to take part in high-level research projects, in and out of college. The University’s Office of Research has links with federal and industry partners around the world including NASA, the US Army, Department of Energy and National Science Foundation, providing students with real-life challenges such as publishing papers and presenting at conferences.
College of Graduate Studies
UAH’s College of Graduate Studies offers an extensive range of master’s degrees, doctoral degrees and graduate certificates. Programs span a wide spectrum of subjects across the colleges – Business Administration, Engineering, Education, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Science. Interdisciplinary programs, drawing elements from different disciplines, are available, as are ‘Fifth-Year’ programs which combine a master’s degree with a Class A (High School) Teaching Certificate in Liberal Arts and Science subjects.
International students are welcomed and quickly integrate into life on campus. The Office of International Engagement (OIE) at UAH helps to promote international integration as well as coordinating the programs and services that extend the university to local and global communities. Through the Intensive Language & Culture Program, the Office of Study Abroad and the Office of International Student & Scholar Services, the OIE team provides intensive English language instruction, administers the university’s study-abroad and international exchange programs and oversees international recruitment, admissions and services for international students, scholars, and faculty.
The best of both worlds
UAH is home to over 120 student-run organizations, six sororities and six fraternities, and many popular annual events that bring the campus community together on a regular basis. There are 14 NCAA teams, including the only NCAA ice hockey team in the South, in addition to plenty of intramural and club sports for players of all levels. The five staffed residence halls are all within easy walking distance of the University Fitness Center, varied on-campus dining options, and a brand-new state-of-the-art student center.
UAH is located in Huntsville, Alabama, which, together with surrounding Madison County, is home to 300,000 residents. There’s an abundance of shopping, dining, and entertainment options, and the University’s location in the Tennessee Valley means that there’s no shortage of outdoor recreation. The area is also home to big employers like the Redstone Arsenal, NASA, HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, and Cummings Research Park. Yet despite Huntsville’s growth over the years from a quiet agricultural town to a high-tech business hub, the town still exudes charm and a relaxed pace of life. In short, Huntsville offers students and residents alike a great place to live, work, and play.
