El Salvador marked the 35th anniversary of the killing of Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero ahead of his beatification this year.
The slain Roman Catholic cleric was remembered in Masses, public cultural events and a pilgrimage in the capital, San Salvador.
Marchers on Tuesday held up portraits of Romero and Pope Francis, who last month declared the archbishop a martyr killed out of hatred for his faith.
That declaration put Romero a step closer to possible canonization.
Romero was gunned down March 24, 1980, as he said Mass in a hospital chapel.
