UN prepared to continue supporting Guatemala impunity commission

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says the world body is ready to continue working with Guatemala through a commission that has been investigating criminal networks in the Central American nation.

Guatemalan President Otto Pérez Molina is expected to announce a decision on a two-year renewal of the U.N. International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala by the end of the month by

Ban says the commission’s work has been renewed three times, and the United Nations is prepared “to respond favorably to a request for a further extension.”

A statement emailed to The Associated Press by Ban’s office Monday cites last week’s arrests in Guatemala related to an alleged customs corruption scheme as an example of the commission’s “excellent job investigating criminal networks with ties to government structures.”
