Embattled Guatemala president Pérez Molina says he will finish term

Guatemalan President Otto Pérez Molina has said he will stay in office through his full term ending in January 2016 despite massive protests against government corruption.

Pérez Molina responded Monday to protests that drew 50,000 people into the streets on Saturday, many of them calling for his resignation.

Pérez Molina’s vice president Roxana Baldetti resigned less than two weeks ago after being connected to a fraud ring that allegedly cheated the government out of customs duties. She has not been charged with wrongdoing, but the ring was allegedly run by her former private secretary who remains a fugitive.

The scandal generated a wave of dissatisfaction throughout Guatemala.
