A judge has resigned from Panama’s Supreme Court during an investigation into alleged corruption, making him the second judge to step down amid scandal in the past 12 months.
The Supreme Court announced Friday that Victor Benavides had submitted his letter of resignation.
He is under investigation for alleged money laundering and illicit enrichment.
The investigation hinges on accusations his former bodyguard has made from jail. Benavides has rejected the accusations and says his former employee is just seeking vengeance.
The prosecutor pursuing Benavides said this week that the state has enough evidence to bring charges against him.
In March, another Supreme Court judge was sentenced to five years in prison for embezzlement.
