Police in the Dominican Republic are trying to determine whether the slaying of a Haitian man is connected to an attack by townspeople on migrants.
The body of the unidentified man was found along a road near Hatillo Palma. He had apparently been stabbed to death the same day that townspeople stormed a shantytown to protest the alleged rape of a local woman by a Haitian migrant. The protesters set fire to shacks where migrants live and destroyed the homes of about 20 people.
Police official Pablo Ortega said Thursday that six people have been detained for questioning.
Hatillo Palma is in an agricultural border region where migrants from neighboring Haiti make up much of the labor force. It has been the site of violent clashes in the past.
