Salvadoran Norma Vásquez was enjoying a birthday meal with son Carlos in Los Angeles.
Norma, who has lived in the U.S. since 1984, becomes victim of an unprovoked racist attack by a fellow client.
“Inside, I wasn’t upset. I got more upset when my mom started to cry. It wasn’t fair for my mom to cry to a stranger just because my mom was speaking Spanish.” Carlos commented, who began filming when his mother started crying.
“If you speak Spanish, go back to Spain!” the woman shouts at Norma, while waiting for a table.
“Do you want the Russians over here telling you what to do? Do you want the Nazis telling you what to do?” the woman adds.
“That’s what you’re doing to my mom. You’re telling her what to do. She speaks English. She’s not perfect, but she speaks English.” Carlos responds.
“I felt like I was trash, as if I was worthless.” the Salvadoran later comments.
Social media storm
Carlos uploaded the video to his Facebook page, without expecting that it would generate such furor from both sides.
To date, the recording has had around 15 million views.
