Judge orders jail for Peréz Molina

A judge has ordered former Guatemalan President Otto Peréz Molina jailed while he faces fraud, conspiracy and bribery charges.

Judge Miguel Ángel Gálvez says there is evidence linking the former president to a customs scandal that has already claimed the former vice president and other government officials.

The customs corruption scandal, uncovered by prosecutors and a U.N. commission known as CICIG, which is investigating criminal networks in the country, involved a scheme known as “La Linea,” or “The Line,” believed to have defrauded the state of millions.

Gálvez issued the ruling on Tuesday.
