Suspect arrested over journalist murder

The Colombian Attorney General’s Office says it has arrested a man who was sentenced earlier this year after killing a well-known journalist.

Ferney Tapasco had been a fugitive since June, he was arrested in the city of Manizales, about 165 kilometers northeast of Bogotá.

The Superior Court of Manizales had sentenced Tapasco to 36 years imprisonment for the murder of journalist Orlando Sierra, of La Patria de Manziales newspaper. Sierra was shot on January 30, 2002 and died two days later. Sierra had been receiving death threats prior to the attack.

Sierra had penned various pieces criticizing government officials over corruption allegations, including critiques of Ferney Tapasco.

A total of 41 journalists have been killed in Colombia since 1992, according to the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists.
