Embarrassing blunder for Colombia at Miss Universe competition

In an embarrassing blunder made by U.S. host Steve Harvey, Miss Colombia was crowned Miss Universe for the second consecutive year, only to be stripped of her crown a couple of minutes later.

Current Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutiérrez was named Miss Universe as the presenter soon realized his slip-up.

Amid boos from the watching crowd, Harvey took to the stage to admit his mistake, as the pageant’s judging panel had actually chosen Miss Philippines as the new reigning beauty.

In excitement, previous winner Paulina Vega gave the crown, sash and bouquet of flowers to her compatriot. It was set to be a repeat victory for Colombia and would have only been the second time a back to back win had taken place in the contest’s history.

Social media networks were bombarded with angry comments from Colombian supporters, declaring the mistake an outrage.

How it happened…

When television broadcasting was about to end, Steve Harvey called for silence from the audience and said “I have to apologize”, prior to announcing there had been a mistake and that Miss Colombia was not the winner.

With crown on head and bouquet in hand, Ariadna Gutiérrez froze on stage for a few seconds without understanding what was happening.

The audience in Las Vegas – where the contest was taking place – showed mixed reactions of dismay and excitement, with Colombian supporters shouting angrily while the Philippine beauty Pia Wurtzbach’s supporters cheered ecstatically.

Viewers were left without seeing exactly how the matter was resolved, with the transmission ending earlier than scheduled.

Harvey showed the camera the card on  which the results of the contest were listed.

The presenter has said that he will “take responsibility” for his blunder, taking to Twitter after the show to apologize for his not-so-little mistake:

The three finalists in this years competition were Colombia, USA and Philippines.

This year was the 64th anniversary of the Miss Universe competition.
