Bolivian President Evo Morales and his political party hope that the Force will be with him come February’s referendum on his re-election.
#Yes Bolivia, a Facebook page apparently run by President Morales’ team, published a “trailer” on Tuesday. The video is the official trailer of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but with the faces of Bolivian politicians edited into the characters’ bodies. The ruling party represents the Light side of the Force while former President Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada’s party is the Dark side of the Force:
In the modified trailer, Morales stars as newcomer Finn, played by John Boyega, who is one of the main characters in the film. The face of Vice President Alvaro Garcia Linera is replaced by Harrison Ford’s as Han Solo, while Senate President Gabriela Montaño is Rey, portrayed by Daisy Ridley.
On the “dark side” are former president Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada as Darth Vader and former defense minister as Kylo Ren. Instead of J.J. Abrams’ movie title at the end of the video, “Bolivian Wars: The Awakening” is shown. The video has more than 47,000 views.
Accompanying the video is a call-to-action, “Starring: You, him, her, all of us who are fighting against the Empire and seeking a better future. Join the Light side of the Force, next to the #Yes. Say NO to the dark past, backwardness, poverty, and evil.”
On February 21, Bolivians will vote to decide if they will allow President Morales and Vice President Linera to run for a possible re-election for the term 2020 to 2025.
