Shark attacks Venezuelan sailor minutes before rescue

A Venezuelan man was attacked by a shark just moments prior to his rescue.

The vessel was carrying seven Venezuelan merchants when it capsized in the Caribbean Sea near the coast of Aruba on Monday.

“The man was clinging to a rescue buoy and was attacked as a member of the Coast Guard suspended from a helicopter tried to rescue him,” Dutch Coast Guard spokesperson Roderick Gouverneur told The Associated Press.

Gouverneur added that the man died on Saturday on the way to the hospital after suffering fatal injuries.

Two men were also killed when the boat was destroyed. Three men were rescued by the coast guard while holding onto a pallet and a refrigerator, and another crew member was rescued by an oil tanker. The four men are currently recovering from dehydration.

The boat was on its way to the Dutch island of Bonaire to sell whiskey.
